While many girls dream of the white dress they will one day wear to walk down the aisle, Ashley Krauss dreamt of being the person who makes those dreams come true.
After years at a leading investment bank, Ashley utilized her business background to open A Little Something White in September 2012.
Ever since, Ashley and her team have been passionate about finding “the dress” for each individual woman.
We took a look back with Ashley at the whirlwind year since the boutique’s opening.
Describe A Little Something White in three words.
Exquisite, Positive, Inspiring
Who, what, where inspires you?
My family is my greatest source of inspiration. I am the mother of two adorable boys and wife to a hard-working, loving husband. Starting a business, watching it become successful, and enjoying what I do on a daily basis means I am a better wife and mother. I want my boys to grow up seeing that their mother works hard at something she loves…and it is that goal that inspires me on a daily basis.
Additionally, I am so fortunate to be surrounded by a network of amazing women who also inspire me.
What was your wedding dress like?
I wore an Alvina Valenta drop-waist ballgown for my wedding. The bodice was made of Alencon lace and the skirt was silk-faced duchess satin. It had a very pronounced v-neckline and spaghetti straps. At the waist was a satin ribbon that tied in the back. The color was oyster, which is a very light ivory.

What do you love about brides?
Brides are filled with so much excitement and energy. A woman really starts to see herself as a bride when she is with us trying on gowns. I never get tired of witnessing this beautiful and emotional transformation.
What is the least enjoyable part about working with brides?
The least enjoyable part is when a bride is overly critical of herself. It is upsetting when one of our lovely brides looks in the mirror and sees anything less than a beautiful woman standing in front of her. We recognize that a wedding is an emotionally-charged, high stress event, and since we were all brides not too long ago, we can easily be sympathetic to what a bride is going through. More often than not, the underlying problem is the stress of juggling wedding planning with work and other priorities.
Who are your 3 favorite bridal designers, and why?
It is so difficult to pick just three among the designers we carry, as we absolutely adore them all! But if I absolutely had to pick, I would choose the following three:
- Anna Maier (designed by Greenwich resident Charles Bunstine)
- Coren Moore (a Darien resident)
- Sareh Nouri
Do you have a favorite "famous" wedding dress?
I don’t think I can just pick one favorite! Here are two of my all-time favorites:
Jackie Kennedy: I thought she looked simply stunning on her wedding day. I love that the silhouette (a ball gown) and neckline (off the shoulder) were modest. However, I would have expected the pattern on the gown to be non-existent or something really understated, and I love that she chose something that made a bit of a statement.
Kate Middleton: It feels slightly predictable to name Kate Middleton as one of my favorites, but I thought she was breathtakingly beautiful on her wedding day. I woke up early and sat glued to the television to watch her make her first bridal appearance. I’ll never forget it. She was radiant. The right bridal gown brings out the very best in a bride, and that was Kate Middleton on her wedding day.
I absolutely loved my wedding dress and wouldn’t change a thing about it! It was a little bit youthful, but sophisticated at the same time. I was so sad to take the gown off at the end of the night. I hope all of the brides I work with feel the same way about their wedding gowns!
Would you ever wear white to someone else's wedding?
Personally, I would not, even if the bride herself told me it was okay. I’d worry that [guests might be distracted from the] bride and groom, who should be the focal point of the day. There are so many other colors to wear, why run the risk of taking the spotlight away from the bride?
