Blue Crush

Yes, they’re delicious, but blueberries also have a ton of nutritional benefits: they’re rich in antioxidants and chock full of vitamin C, dietary fiber and manganese; they improve memory and cardiovascular health and can prevent ulcers. You can find these miniature super foods on menus and in stores all across our towns. Following are some of our favorite ways to enjoy the fruit of the month.

SoNo Baking Company & Cafe, 49 Tokeneke Rd., Darien,

You’ll find a number of creative blueberry baked goods at this gourmet bistro in the heart of Darien, including the Coconut Blueberry Tart and Blueberry Danish. At SoNo Bakery, the goods are baked fresh every morning, which means these treats are so tasty they may disappear in the car ride home.

Green & Tonic, 5 Burtis Ave., New Canaan; 1098 Boston Post Rd., Darien,

Try the signature fruit smoothies, which are both delicious and good for you. Made with ingredients like blueberries, coconut water and banana, the Berry Garcia and Gravitas smoothies are as tasty as they are nutritious, but you can amp up the health benefits by adding supplements such an immune defense boost and bee pollen.

Le Pain Quotidien Bakery, 81 Elm St., New Canaan,

Because this eatery emphasizes the use of organic, fresh ingredients in all of its offerings, it’s become one of the go-to spots for breakfast, lunch and baked goods in New Canaan. Connecticut Muffin, 108 Main St., New Canaan,

Start the day off right with the mini power fruit baked into the shop’s famous muffins (low-fat are offered), scones and loaf cakes. Use it to spice up a piece of toast, make blueberry jam cookies, or replace the jelly in a PB&J sandwich for a fun twist on the classic. Look for other fun combination jams like Raspberry Chocolate and Strawberry Champagne, so all your berry needs get satisfied.

Cesco’s Tratorria, 25 Old Kings Highway N., Darien,

Given that this elegant eater is a Best of the Gold Coast winner for Italian food, it’s no surprise that Cesco’s homemade Italian cheesecake with is as fabulous as it is. The secret? We think it’s the tasty blueberry sauce drizzled over the top.

Sugar Bowl, 1033 Boston Post Rd., Darien,

Who do you know who doesn’t savor a pile of buttery pancakes? Add a dollop of fresh blueberries to that stack and you unlock a whole new level of tastiness. Sugar Bowl, a Darien favorite for breakfast and brunch, will also cook up whole wheat cakes for health-conscious customers.
