Beauty in Bloom

Photographs: Stacy Bass

It’s no secret that Greenwich is home to breathtaking estates and gorgeous gardens. But getting over the walls or under the gates can prove to be a bit problematic. No worries. We have the perfect solution for the inner Mrs. Kravitz in all of us: GARDENS AT FIRST LIGHT, a collaboration between athome books and frequent Greenwich magazine nature photographer Stacy Bass.

Stacy, a Westport resident, is celebrated nationally for her images of homes and gardens. Her nature work, in particular, is driven by her penchant to shoot at daybreak. For this book (her second), she went behind the gates of a dozen private estates to capture these spaces at dawn. She’s curated her best images into a volume filled with more than 200 photos. Complementing her images are words by Judy Ostrow, who also contributes to this magazine. Hand-drawn sketches by James Gerrity show a bird’s-eye view of each property, allowing readers to gain a broader understanding of the elements.

Over the years, Stacy has photographed some of the loveliest landscapes in the Northeast, and she knows a dynamic garden when she sees one. It’s good news for local pride, then, that some of the unique properties showcased in this volume are right here in Greenwich.

Gardens at First Light ($60) is available at local bookshops and can be ordered through Amazon. (And, ahem, let’s not forget Mother’s Day is just around the corner.)

Gardens at First Light features several local properties.
