Game of Stones

The whole look
Cashmere bead necklace, silk and cashmere sweater and stunning jewels

The Brits have always been fashion trendsetters, and London-bred jewelry designer Barbara Harris of Water Jewels is no exception. This fourth-generation jeweler, who studied at Parsons and served as design director for Elle in Asia, has opened a new store on the Avenue to showcase her one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories. The handmade pieces blend gems and pearls in timeless designs with a modern edge.

“I’ve been around gemstones all my life,” says Barbara, who is also a lapidist. “We are pearl experts and I have sources that go back generations in Japan.” She began making jewelry for herself years ago because she couldn’t find the pieces she wanted to wear. After her rings caught the eye of a Vogue editor, her designs were quickly picked up by stores and she now has two other shops, in London and Nantucket.

Here in Greenwich, expect to find elegant pieces such as cashmere bead and Japanese pearl necklaces (with cashmere sweaters dyed to match), a chunky Himalayan rock crystal cuff, and cool, bold rings (we love the diamond and Amalfi coral ring). Barbara also stocks luxe accessories from a few other designers, including Olympia Le-Tan clutches, Linda Farrow sunglasses and Sophie Digard scarves, as well as her own label cashmere and mink wraps, sweaters and ballet flats. All complement the jewelry, which is truly unique, like the stone rings that can’t be sized so you hope to find one that fits. “It’s a Cinderella kind of thing,” says Barbara. “We’re not looking to sell twenty of a necklace. We’ll sell one.”
