The Artist’s Way to Home Shopping

For all the lightness and brightness and pops of vibrant color at Design Within Reach, this place is serious about furniture. Located at 154 Post Road East, the cross currents of Westport’s Post Road and Main Street, DWR displays ottomans, recliners, sofas and more in a vast space that is not unlike an art gallery. The pieces, even, more closely resemble works of art than simply places to throw your workout tee. Like a docent, studio proprietor

Marcelo Fernandez, who has been with Design Within Reach for four years, walked Westport  magazine through some of the store’s new pieces for the season as well as timeless classics.

From the Terassi Collection

Fernandez strolls up to the Terassi Collection and lingers. This is a series of outdoor pieces that combine light wood with comfortable cushion seating in a wide array of colors. While intended as outdoor seating during the warmer months, he notes that the collection is both “beautiful and comfortable enough to enjoy for longer than the summer.”

From the Como Collection

Moving from the back patio into inspiration for the living room, we stop at the Como sectional with chaise. The name is inspired by its Italian designer, and Fernandez coins it the “most luxurious sofa.” The sofa comes in an abundance of size options, with each one made in Italy. Here is your new favorite escape to soften the edges of daily demands.

Eames Lounge and Ottoman

Among the DWR fan favorites is the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, available in a variety of shells and leather variations. Fernandez notes that this piece is on everybody’s wish list, as it extends the museum-like pieces into your own home. “When you have one of these pieces,” he says, “you have art.”

DWR also offers complimentary services, such as “expert design consultations, in-home measuring and 3-D renderings of your rooms,” according to its catalog. Clients can schedule appointments or drop-in for advice on how to customize a piece with the store team or redesign an entire room.
