Photo Design Within Reach
1 break the rules, just for fun
Of course Design Within Reach (dwr.com) is big enough to contain many homes’ worth of beds, chairs, rugs, funky bar stools, mid-century-inspired coffee tables, leather seats and storage options, shelves to wire bins. But today is about focusing on what helps us to actually see it all: good lighting, of course. DWR has plenty of modern and contemporary options in many personalities and for many purposes. Need overhead lighting? How about a drop light? Love your reading chair but squinting at the words in front of you? Spotlight floor lamps to the rescue. Burning the midnight oil and cramming for a big presentation at work? Turn to focused task lighting with a sleek desk lamp. DWR, founded in 1998, loves authentic modern design in all of its sleekness. DWR has a weakness for the work of iconic designers, and it’s up to you to see the advantage of this.
2 making time for a romance
Within Stamford’s Antique and Design district, you’ll find plenty of stylish lighting, lampshades and other home accessories—everything from Nest candles and leather-and-velvet pillows to shiny gold serving trays and a Burmese Rattan basket in a honey brown that is both dreamy and practical. You’re wandering The Accessory Store (stamfordshades.com), coming up with ideas left and right. This contemporary place is the bright idea of Mark Candido and Ron Scinto, cofounders of The Antique & Artisan Center; you’re in good hands. A cool place, it was launched to help design-savvy customers and interior designers who were wearing out their high-end shoes running from place to place to source the finishing touches for their home- renovations and staging projects. The newer place carries the largest selection of lampshades in the Northeast.
3 honoring today’s artisan tradition
You might have stopped into a store thinking you needed a platter for an upcoming party or a pretty candle for a hostess gift, but then you might quickly notice the sophisticated pendant lighting, and another one, and another one. Yes, Juliska (juliska.com) has a flagship store in Stamford and the lighting is worth the stop in and of itself. The pendants and chandeliers are simply beautiful, and made so by master glass blowers in the Czech Republic. Husband-and-wife Capucine and David Gooding founded the store in 2001 to offer artisan mouth-blown glasses. They fell in love with Bohemian glassware in Europe and built a brand known for quality and style. See it for yourself in the well-lit store on Canal Street. All of the pendants at the design shop are available for order for next-day pick up or complimentary home delivery. (P.S. The Factory Outlet is right next door—be sure to drop in.)
